Recently turned 40, Nick has been writing on and off for over twenty years. His output during this time has varied from short story fiction, with some of this having been read on radio, to dry polemics on the future of the NHS.
Walking on Water is not his first full length book. That distinction belongs to a speculative political thriller written in the 1980s, which he destroyed after many of the events he described actually happened! It is however the first he has been in a position to share with a wider audience.
Walking on Water is the result of a unique set of circumstances, which came together to give Nick the chance to dedicate himself to a story he wanted to tell. These included a serendipitous opportunity to buy a narrow boat and a more calculated voluntary redundancy from a job which had gone sour. When these were combined with the need to bring the boat 250 miles south, he had all the ingredients for the journey which is so vividly described in his book.
Nick is married with two young children. At different times, these and other members of his family feature as crew in his book, their various personalities and character providing a shifting backdrop to his journey. They also provide a counterpoint to what is essentially a personal odyssey, which in turn reflects his interest in what makes both people and societies tick.
Writing is one of Nick's passions. Never one for the nine to five, he has earned his living in professions as varied as gardener and management consultant. He has also helped to organise the building of a house in under twelve weeks and since leaving university has helped to create and develop five separate new businesses. He has no idea what he will be doing in five years time, but then again he never has. Whatever it is though, it is certain that writing will feature heavily.
