SECURING THE FUTURE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CHARITY

As it approached the tenth anniversary of its foundation in the UK, young person's charity Children's Express faced a problem. Although there was no doubt about the benefits its approach to involving young people in journalism delivered, uncertainty did exist about the durability of its structure in the face of both an increasingly complex funding system and changes in its core field of the media.

Catalyst was asked to conduct a thorough review of the charity's operations, involving consultation at all levels of the organisation, with clients and other third parties, as well as a review of its main 'marketplace'. Working with the Chief Executive and Trustees, a series of options were then worked up and shared with the staff and young people leading to a final recommendation designed to secure at least another ten years for the organisation.

In so doing, Catalyst lived up to its name, acting as a conduit between different viewpoints and putting forward solutions which had previously evaded the organisation. In the process a key part of our role was to engage with all stakeholders and, where appropriate, to challenge previously held assumptions and free the way towards the implementation of workable solutions.
