HELPING FAST TRACK PROFESSIONALS MANAGE THEIR OWN CAREER

Traditional career expectations amongst the legal profession are changing. Firms can no longer afford the rate of partner creation that has traditionally sustained the ambitions of those on their way up the legal ladder. At the same time, young talent has become less willing to accept the lifestyle costs associated with single-minded pursuit of partner status. More individually tailored career development solutions are needed.

Catalyst worked with CMS Cameron McKenna over a number of years to deliver such a solution. In particular, we worked with them to provide a way for 5/6 years PQE lawyers to pause and take stock of where they were in their career, rather than chase down paths that might not deliver what they want. Catalyst acted as an independent third party, listening with confidentiality and separate from other more formal assessment procedures. Those taking part in the programme did so voluntarily.

The approach involved a series of three or four one on one sessions with an independent trained coach. The first session was used to agree the individual's objectives - a process facilitated by the use of psychometric and other tools - with subsequent sessions used to take stock of talents, skills and expectations and to take the conclusions of these as a basis for agreeing a way forward. The relationship ended with agreement on the individual's vision of their career (on both personal and professional levels) and to discuss the pros and cons of different options.

Despite initial scepticism, the client identified significantly higher levels of motivation, determination and dedication to learning from those participating in the programme. Individuals reported feeling better equipped to manage their own careers and to explore and develop more creative career options - whether that included aiming for a partnership or otherwise.
